Phase 01 - R&D
For the first phase of our Video Game Project, we will conduct Research and Development (R&D). Research and Development is a process of studying existing technologies or ideas and creating new / better versions of those ideas.
Since our project will be to create a video game, we will study "classic" video games from the NES-era of gaming (1985-1990). Many of these games helped to define what video games can be and helped to solidify video gaming as more than just a toy or a fad. Characters and titles from this era still exist today and are some of the most widely recognized names in video games.

The main elements of game design we will be observing are:
- Objective - What is the point of the game? What are you trying to achieve?
- Characters - Who is the main character? Why might the designers of the game have chosen that character?
- Level Design - Do you move left to right? Is there jumping? Can you move up or down? Are there puzzles to solve?
- Power-Ups - Can you collect objects to make yourself stronger or give special abilities?
- Complexity - Is the challenge too easy, too hard, or just right?
Use the links below to research some classic games from the NES era.
OBJECTIVES:
Option 1: Compare and contrast 2 games from this list.
Option 2: Compare and contrast 1 game from this list and 1 modern game (from the Wii, XBox, PS3, or PC). Click HERE to open an interactive Venn Diagram to Compare and Contrast your games. |

Extension:
Try to find older games and compare them with some of the Nintendo games featured on NESBox.com. Be sure to add a link to the website where you played the other games on your RESOURCES page.
